Review: Shadow of Madness

Shadow of Madness by D. V. Bishop is the 6th book in the Cesare Aldo Series.

It follows a detective in Renaissance Florence.

However, rather than a crime, Aldo pursues a personal investigation.

Set at the Ospedale de’ Pazzi a monastery that used to be daughters of the rich who got pregnant out of wedlock. However, it is now used, to house the criminally insane

Aldo is on his way there, with his Jewish lover Doctor Saul Orvieto., officerly to inspect the place for its patrons, although he has a more personal reason for going.

However, on the day of his arrival not only is there a snowstorm which traps Aldo and Saul at the monastery, more worrying is that the dead body of the cart driver that brought the two of them there seems to be dead at the bottom of a drop.

Diverse set of Characters

Shadow of Madness like all the previous books in the series is historical mystery thriller set in 16th century Italy. Which means most readers who have a casual understanding of this period would expect most characters to be male and chatholic.

However, this is not the case as the titular character of the series Cesare Aldo is a member of the LGBT community along with is long-term companion and lover Doctor Saul Orvieto.

Although set before the formation of the Jewish Ghetto in Florance in 1571 Saul is still restricted because of his race,

In addition, while Nuns in the monastery are treated as second class citizens by the guards and the monks, they play an important role in novel.

6th Book of the Series

If you have read the previous books in this series then Shadow of Madness will not let you down, as the basic trope of a limited number of individuals being trapped in a remote location where people are being murdered, is a staple of the mystery thriller genre.

While Shadow of Madness is not up there with the best written novel with this trope, it is still a competent version.

What makes Shadow of Madness stand out as a novel, is the fact that is the 6th one in D.V. Bishop’s Cesare Aldo series of novels. As you as a reader gets to know more about Aldo’s background along with his Jewish lover Saul Orvieto.

Read in Order?

While most of the books in the series are able to be read out of order as the writer D.V. Bishop is able to add enough information in each novel, so new readers to the series are able to follow on with the overall arc of the series without too much difficulty.

However, with Shadow of madness being more tied to Aldo’s origins than the previous books in the series this book is definitely one that needs to be read in order.

Politics

While this novel is removed from the politics of 1540’s Florence, Aldo is stepping into a world as equally divided, time with three, the Nuns, Monks and guards each one supposedly working together, for the good of the monestry.

Added to that each group as its own divisions as individuals aim to improve their station. All of which has an effect on how Aldo investigates the case.

Who Should read? Shadow of Madness

While normal all previous books in this series are able to be read out of order Shadow of Madness is different in this respect as it delves more into Aldo’s background which may lower the enjoyment for some readers new to the series.

Conclusion

Shadow of Madness, like all other books in the series, is a fascinating historical mystery to read.

Moreover, the main character Cesare Aldo is a member of the LGBT community, with Saul as a constant romantic connection.

It is not the main part of his personality but there are times he acts in such a way because of his sexual preferences and the historical setting.

Making Shadow of Madness a well-rounded historical mystery thriller and well wort reading.
