Synopsis: The Lucky Winners

When Merri and Dev buy a ticket on the last day of a national draw to win the house of their dreams, they never, in a million years, expect to win.

Less than a week later, they’re receiving the keys to their new Lake District mansion.

For Dev, it’s a dream come true – no more stressful rent negotiations, or waiting for the landlord to finally fix the damp. Of course he’s delighted to be interviewed about their good luck.

But Merri feels a little uneasy. Dev doesn’t realise there’s a reason she’s never wanted to put down roots, always trying to run away from the memories of what happened the day her little sister died.

At first it’s easy to think she’s imagining the shadowy figures in the lakefront garden. It’s silly to think that someone is watching her through the gorgeous floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

And then a body is found in the lake. And Merri’s new perfect life is about to come crashing down…

Review: The Lucky Winners

The Lucky Winners by K. L. Slater, is your standard psychological thriller.

However. it is also a novel that is based in the real world because due to the trigger of the story being winning a new house,

The Lucky Winners plot line allows the author K.L. Slater to discuss as part of the story the housing crisis in the UK both in the city as well as the countryside.

However, this and other areas covered are brushed off so quickly that the writer has used this as a jumping off point for a story but does not want to get into the issues in depth,

which is ok for a novel from the mystery thriller genre.

The Pretty Little Lies TV show issue?

While all the twists and turns were plausible, they did seem to be on the far end of realistic, not that plot twist on thriller like this need to be solidly based in the real world.

This may not be the type of book that K.L. Slater was trying to write but that is what it is.

This gave The Lucky Winners, the feeling that during the initial writing of the novel. the twists, seemed so obvious to the writer.

So, K.L Slater wrote twists until it became almost possible to guess similar to how the TV show Pretty Little Liars plot started to become over the top at the end of the shows run.

Setting

While the setting of both the winning house in the lake district and the hometown of Nottingham could have been used to give a solid foundation to the novel. It felt that Lucky winners could have been located in any other place and it would have made little chang to the novel.

The one thing that the writer did well was the unease that Merri and DEV had dealing with a majority of the locals, who do not like people coming to the area and taking away homes. This was particularly well done when Dev went in to the local pub and was shinned by the locals.

Who Should Read? The Lucky Winners

The Lucky Winners is the Ideal novel for anyone who loves a good phycological mystery thriller that will not challenge them intellectually, it would be an enjoyable novel to relax to.

Conclusion

While The Lucky Winners by K. L. Slater may not be the most challenging, thrillers out on the market nor will it cause a political storm or go down as one of the great novels of all time. However, if you are looking to enjoy a few hours then Lucky Winners by K.L. Slater is for you.
