As Thirza seeks solace in her painting and finds herself drawn into a forbidden, passionate affair, the idyllic façade of the Greek villa begins to crack. The island holds more than just memories—it holds long-buried truths, tangled emotions, and a trail of jealousy, betrayal, and heartbreak that could change everything she thought she knew about her family.

Review: The Greek House
Set on the sun-drenched island of Corfu during the 1920s and 1930s, The Greek House tells the story of the Cruthers family in the aftermath of a tragedy. On the very day that Italy shells and invades the Greek island, young Billy Cruthers disappears—an event that sends shockwaves through his family for years to come.
The story picks up when his sister, Thirza, returns to Corfu to prepare the family’s summer house for their mother. As Thirza works on the renovations, the reader uncovers how Billy’s disappearance has shaped not only the family’s present but also their past, all against the backdrop of historical turmoil and social change.
If you’re expecting a novel focused primarily on a sister’s desperate search for her lost brother—as the synopsis might suggest—The Greek House may not deliver on that premise. Instead, what Dinah Jefferies offers is a slow-burning, layered family drama, rich with secrets, emotional undercurrents, and a touch of romance.
Told through Thirza’s perspective, the novel explores grief, love, and long-buried truths. As she navigates the complexities of her family’s history, she also embarks on a passionate affair with an Italian travel writer who harbors secrets of his own.
While the novel successfully captures the opulence and emotional tensions of a privileged family in decline, it does at times feel longer than necessary. At over 400 pages, some sections could have benefited from tighter pacing.
Conclusion
The Greek House may not be the suspenseful missing-person mystery some readers expect, but for those drawn to historical fiction with a strong sense of place and a focus on family secrets, it offers a rewarding, atmospheric read. It’s less about finding Billy and more about uncovering what his disappearance reveals about those left behind.
