Synopsis: Beautiful Ugly
Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney is a spellbinding mystery that follows Grady Green, an author whose life is turned upside down when his wife, Abby, inexplicably vanishes.
One moment, Grady is on cloud nine, excitedly sharing news over the phone with her; the next, he’s left reeling after a frantic call, followed by the chilling discovery of her abandoned car on a cliffside—door open, headlights still on, and Abby nowhere to be found.
A year later
Grief still clings to him like a shadow. Unable to sleep or write, Grady escapes to a remote Scottish island in a desperate bid to reclaim his shattered life. There, in an unexpected twist of fate, he encounters a woman whose striking resemblance to Abby is impossible to ignore. As questions mount and reality begins to blur with the uncanny, Grady is drawn into a maze of secrets that forces him to confront his loss, his memories, and the possibility that nothing is quite as it seems.
Beautiful Ugly is a taut, atmospheric tale of love, loss, and the mysteries that linger in the wake of tragedy—a journey that will keep you guessing until its final, unforgettable twist.

Review: Beautiful Ugly
Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney is a locked-room thriller that plunges readers into the isolated, eerie setting of a remote Scottish island—a place that becomes as much a character in the story as the people within it. The novel follows Grady Green, a once-successful author whose creative spark has fizzled ever since his last book soared to New York Times bestseller status on the same day his wife mysteriously vanished. On the ferry to the island, Grady is jolted by a shocking sight: a woman who bears an uncanny resemblance to his missing wife, throwing him into a psychological labyrinth of doubt, guilt, and desperate hope.
Plot and Structure
The narrative is primarily seen through Grady’s eyes, making it straightforward to follow his descent into obsession and paranoia. Feeney also intersperses a few chapters from his wife’s perspective—set before her disappearance—which offer a poignant glimpse into their crumbling marriage and the events that led to her vanishing. This dual perspective adds a layer of complexity to the story, inviting readers to question what is real and what might be a figment of Grady’s unraveling mind.
Genre and Themes
While Beautiful Ugly is categorized as a mystery thriller, it straddles the line with psychological thriller elements. Much of the tension arises not from high-octane action but from the slow-building psychological pressure on Grady.
While the setting of an isolated island is not unusual in today’s novels of this type, due to the fact it solves the problem of internet connection, were almost everyone normally has access to instant communication to the outside role.
However rather than having the setting in one building for example like Agatha Christies novel “And then There Were None” (my review of this classic), Beautiful Ugly, feels more like the classic tv show from the 60’s The Prisoner (Wikipedia Link). Although Alice Feeney does do this well taking this basic premise, making it a major part of the novel.
With the setting and atmosphere caused by the setting of an isolated of the Scottish island, does mirror the isolation in Grady’s own troubled mind. The novel raises profound questions about perception, loss, and the lingering effects of guilt—elements that resonate with readers who appreciate stories that dwell on the fragility of the human psyche.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths:
Atmospheric Setting: The remote Scottish island, with its brooding landscapes and claustrophobic feel, heightens the mystery and sets the perfect stage for Grady’s internal turmoil.
Character-Driven Narrative: Grady’s journey is as much about confronting his past and the ghosts in his mind as it is about solving a mystery. His internal struggles are rendered with authenticity, making his obsession and despair palpable.
Intriguing Dual Perspectives: The inclusion of chapters from his wife’s point of view, though limited, enriches the narrative and provides insight into the collapse of their marriage, adding emotional depth to the mystery.

Weaknesses:
Familiar Tropes: Some readers will find that the novel treads well-worn ground. The locked-room setup and the plot twist of a wife’s doppelgänger are familiar devices in both literature and screen adaptations.
Pacing: The slow build of tension, while atmospheric, will test the patience of those seeking a faster-paced thriller. At 320 pages, the novel’s deliberate pace might deter readers who prefer immediate gratification in plot development.
Polarizing Ending: Although the conclusion provides a definitive resolution, its nature may leave some readers unsettled or uncomfortable, as it challenges conventional expectations of closure in thrillers.
Conclusion
In Beautiful Ugly, Alice Feeney delivers a thought-provoking and immersive psychological mystery that, while not for everyone, will deeply resonate with readers who appreciate a slow-burn narrative filled with emotional nuance. Its atmospheric setting, complex character study, and haunting exploration of memory and loss make it a compelling read for fans of psychological thrillers. For those willing to embrace its deliberate pacing and somewhat unconventional twists, Beautiful Ugly offers an unforgettable journey into the darker corners of the human mind.
